Newsletter 012

I’ve not sent out a newsletter since June because I’ve been busy with a complete redesign of the Discovering Egypt website. It is something I’ve been thinking about for over a year and never finding the time to do. At last it's now completed.
http://www.discoveringegypt.com

First of all I’ve updated the code behind the pages to the latest web standards so that the pages will load quicker and be more search engine friendly.

I’ve also improved the visual design and layout and have made the pages printer friendly. This means when you print a page all the ink wasting elements such as navigation buttons, background images and images not related to the text subject will not be printed.

Finally I’ve included a lot of new text and visual content on most of the pages particularly in the new Free Videos section.

These videos are my response to the massive interest from you, the subscribers to this newsletter, in the 1980s documentaries of John Romer. There are now 52 videos which you can watch full screen on you computer or TV if you are using Windows Media OS. These range from my own computer generated fly through reconstructions of the temples to full ancient Egyptian documentaries. Of course you will need a broadband connection to see these.

Each page also has an Add This button which allows you to instantly bookmark the page to your browser or social bookmark.

This newsletter is not a bit smaller than normal but the next one will be in the usual format. For those of you who are receiving it for the first time you can checkout the back Issues (below).

I hope you enjoy the new site – if you spot any typos please let me know.

Ancient Letters
Loan of grain
Papyrus Louvre E 3228 [2]

On this day the funerary priest Padibastet, son of Padiimenipet, has said to the priest of Amun and scribe of the royal correspondence, Neskhonsuwenekh, son of Djedhor.

"I shall give you 22½ sacks of wheat measured in "domestic bushels", on the 30th day of the 4th month of inundation in the 13th year.

I shall return them to you without protest, as truly as Amun lives and the king lives, may he be in good health and may Amun grant him victory.

If I do not deliver at the appointed time, these 22½ sacks will bear interest regularly beginning from the 13th year.
I shall not revoke this undertaking."

This was followed by the signatures of seven witnesses. After a French translation by Michel Malinine

I’ve finished the Java site which I made for my wife who comes from Java – you will find text photos and video about Java’s history and its temples. There are videos of  the traditional music called Gamelan as well as traditional dance and the Shadow Puppet theatre which is very popular in Java. You will also find out how Batik fabrics are made.

Vivian Stanshall
I’ve also made a website as a tribute to the late Vivian Stanshall who was my friend and artistic mentor.

Those of you who have my book, Imagining Egypt, will notice that I dedicated it to him. Vivian was admired by many celebrities such as the Beatles, he wrote the lyrics for Steve Winwood songs and comedians such as John Cleese and Stephan Fry wee fans.

His brand of music and humour is very British and a forerunner of shows such as Monty Python. Vivian supported and encouraged my artistic endeavours at a time when I was about to give it all up and join civilian life in the teaching profession.

You will find lots of videos of his work and links to the many appreciation societies on the web. http://www.vivianstanshall.co.uk

My YouTube

I’ve also got into YouTube and made my own video channel

http://uk.youtube.com/user/markmillmore You will find lot of my own videos plus other things I find entertaining.
